With the warm and humid weather already making its seasonal appearance in Montreal, one thing we all know too well is how many mosquitoes come around during the summer months. While days remain tolerable, It is the nights and evenings that are hard to endure in the city. Being surrounded by mosquitoes is annoying and can easily ruin a night on the patio with friends and family, here are three easy and natural remedies to get rid of Mosquitoes this summer!
Citronella: Citronella oil is derived from the leaves of certain plants. It has been used for years as a natural mosquito repellent. Citronella candles, torches, and essential oils are commonly available. The scent of citronella masks the mosquito-attracting odors, making it harder for mosquitoes to find their targets.
Lemon Eucalyptus: Lemon eucalyptus oil is extracted from the leaves and twigs of the lemon eucalyptus tree. It contains a compound called PMD which has been found to have mosquito-repellent properties. Lemon eucalyptus oil is available as a concentrated oil or as an ingredient in some commercial mosquito repellent products.
Neem Oil: Neem oil is derived from the seeds of the (you guessed it) neem tree, It has insect-repelling properties and is used in many natural insecticides and mosquito repellents. You can apply neem oil directly to your skin or dilute it with regular body oil, such as coconut oil. It has a strong odor, so some people prefer to mix it with other essential oils to improve the scent.
Although these natural remedies are effective, they are not perfect! But at least we can all try to enjoy the short lived summer in Montreal without getting tons of mosquito bites!
Enjoy!
