In Montreal, we love it when the sun finally comes out and the ice begins to melt. But for homeowners, the “Spring Thaw” can be a nervous time. As all that snow turns into water, it can put a lot of pressure on your house.

To help you stay dry, here is a simple checklist you can finish in one afternoon.

1. Test Your Sump Pump

Think of your sump pump as your home’s lifeguard. You want to make sure it is awake and ready to work!

  • The Bucket Test: Slowly pour a bucket of water into the sump pit (the hole in your basement floor). The pump should turn on automatically, move the water out, and then turn itself off.
  • Check the Power: Make sure it is plugged in. If you can, add a battery backup. In Quebec, we often get big storms that knock out the power right when the rain is heaviest!

2. Move Snow Away from the Walls

When the snow right next to your house melts, itaks straight down into your foundation.

  • Take a shovel and move snow at least three feet away from your home’s foundation.
  • Make sure your window wells are clear of ice and frozen leaves so water doesn’t pool against the glass.

3. Check Your Gutters and Spouts

If your gutters are clogged with ice or old leaves, water will over-flow and fall right next to your basement walls.

  • Make sure your downspouts (the pipes coming off your roof) are pointing far away from the house.
  • The water should land at least six feet away from your foundation.

4. Look for Small Cracks

Walk around your basement with a flashlight. Look for any new cracks in the concrete walls or “white powder” (efflorescence) on the floor. These are signs that water is trying to get in. Catching a small crack now is much cheaper than fixing a flooded room later!

5. Know the New Rules

Did you know that Quebec is updating its flood zone maps this March? Many homes in Montreal are being added to new “risk zones.” This might change what kind of insurance you need or what renovations you are allowed to do.

If you live in a building with 1 to 5 units, the City of Montreal also offers a program called RénoPlex. It can help pay for things like backwater valves or new sump pumps to keep your basement safe.

Stay dry and enjoy the warmer weather!
