Back-to-school season in Montreal has just begun or is right around the corner for some families! The first two weeks can be a real challenge filled with excitement and stress for both parents and kids. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Here are five practical tips to make the transition smoother for everyone.
1. Plan Your Morning Routine Like a Pro
Mornings can be chaotic, but a little planning goes a long way. Create a morning checklist with your kids to ensure they’re ready to go. This could include everything from brushing teeth to packing snacks. PS: Our mom used to lay out our clothes/uniform the night before to avoid a last minute clothing crisis!! Sometimes, including your kids in the process can help them get used to doing it on their own as they get older and avoid meltdowns in the morning.
Montreal Tip: Don’t forget to check the weather! Montreal can be unpredictable, so keep an eye on the forecast to dress your kids accordingly.
2. Conquer the Lunchbox Dilemma
Let’s face it, packing healthy lunches can be a chore for any parent. Make it easier by planning a weekly menu. Get your kids involved in choosing what they want—this way, they’re more likely to eat it! The days of a simple mortadella sandwich are long gone. Another classic parent move that really helps… Cook a larger dinner and make yesterday’s overs tomorrow’s lunch!
3. Beat the Traffic Blues
Montreal’s traffic can be a nightmare, especially during rush hour. If you’re driving your kids to school, try leaving a little earlier to avoid the gridlock. If possible, consider carpooling with other parents in your neighborhood. It’s eco-friendly, and it can save you time and stress. Another way to beat the traffic in the morning is to encourage your children to take public transit (if they’re old enough). It might seem like a bigger challenge for parents than their kids, but if you take a couple of days during the summer to practice the bus ride with your kids from home to school, this can be an amazing way for you to save time, your child to become more independent and just make everyone’s life easier!
Montreal Tip: The STM offers discounted fares for students!
4. Set Up a Homework Station
Creating a designated homework area at home can make a world of difference for your child’s education. When I was growing up, I remember doing my homework at the kitchen table and all I could focus on was Seinfeld in the background! Choose a quiet spot in the house where your kids can focus on their homework or studying. Stock it with all the essentials: pencils, paper, and maybe a snack or two. Establishing a routine for homework time will help your kids get into the groove of studying.
5. Stay Organized with a Family Calendar
With school, extracurricular activities, and social events, it’s easy to lose track of time. A family calendar can help keep everyone on the same page. Use it to track important dates like school events, parent-teacher meetings, and after-school activities. Whether you prefer a digital calendar or a classic fridge version, keeping things organized will reduce stress for the entire family.
Back-to-school doesn’t have to be a stressful time. With a little preparation and a positive attitude, you can turn those first two weeks into a smooth and enjoyable experience for both you and your kids. Here’s to a successful school year in Greater Montreal!
